My artistic passion is surrealism, symbolism and minimalism. I aim to give the viewer of what I think ‘bridge of inter-realm space’ – bringing our thoughts out of imaginative thinking or memories, things that we cannot see in front of us, like an idea coming into space that, when we close our eyes it becomes something physical that we as humans can’t interact with. A common object that we may recognize but taken from an unconnected idea or memory.

I aim to be perceptual and very visual with how I explore this – ideas or memories should be allowed to take a shape, even if it is not rational or logical. By taking the inside to outside with no rules I can let my subconscious give me images that I can then give form to as art. My influence is a small but meaningful quote “Less Is More”; I believe minimalism gives the viewer an opportunity to react in their own way without being told what to think. If three different viewers have three different opinions about what one of my artworks means that is a successful outcome for me.

I want to present this form of art in drawings, painting and sculpture. Generally, my drawings will be first iterations of an idea that is evolving, and become a base layer for more developed painting or sculpture pieces. One theme is the use of materials in relation to architecture and the space it inhabits, especially the parts we don’t always see. I refer to this in my art as scaffolding. Using common materials (wood, metal, plastic) should remind us of the hidden things that support a useful object (that could be buildings or even a human form).  I am conveying a field of expression that anyone might sense is relatable to them, either in scale or meaning – for example working a small complicated structure in a tight room space or presenting a large freeform work in an open space. I want to produce work that brings expressionism and minimalism together even though they are two completely different movements to each other – simple works that have integrity. The use of different materials can provide an interesting side point to challenge the viewer – such as a humanoid figure made of brass, or a building made of plastic. I want my future works to provoke a range of emotions in the viewer by questioning what they see or upsetting their first impressions – like something that first looks pretty or delightful but on closer study gives off a heavy crushing feeling.
